🐠Aquaman

Hi everyone! Caught Aquaman tonight at the Drafthouse on South Lamar in Austin. Always great eats and great digs. Let’s talk more about Aquaman.

Ajay: I had high hopes for Jason Momoa as Aquaman. We knew of him from Game of Thrones fame, and my wife has a huge crush on him. Understandable.

He is one of the few bright spots in this movie. Extremely charismatic and a better fit for Aquaman than I had thought. The visuals are spectacular, but for some reason DC Comic movies spend more time on visuals and style than on the characters and plot. Ya know, the most important parts. Not a surprise with Zach Snyder running the show there. Avoid unless you are desperate for a distraction.

Mona: Long. 🧜🏽‍♂️🦈🌊

📗Green Book

Hey y’all! Made it out of the house Sunday night to catch Green Book with Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. Here’s the review!

Ajay: Amazing story inspired by events that two men from NYC lived through en route to an amazing friendship. Y’all, this movie is actually hilarious along with being endearing and tackling sensitive issues. The two actors had amazing performances, and the weight of what they are embarking on in the Deep South is a great backdrop to the comedy in the movie.

Despite controversy, I believe this is one of the best movies of 2018. Even I got misty eyed at the end, that NEVER HAPPENS. Seriously, I have granite where my tear ducts should be. Check this movie out!

Mona: Heartfelt. 🚙🎹🍗

💇‍♀️ Throwback: The Devil Wears Prada

Ajay: My wife was surprised to learn that I enjoy this movie. Here’s my secret: I listened to this Rewatchables podcast about it, and then really wanted to watch it. Guilty.

I forgot how awesome Meryl Streep is in it, and that this movie was how Emily Blunt got discovered, and it was the first movie that Anne Hathaway did after the Princess Diaries…whew! Miranda Priestly is delightfully mean, and that’s all Meryl’s badassery, all day. We caught this on HBO Now, so if you’re looking for something to watch while brooding after that atrocious Longhorn loss, this might do.

Mona: Gucci. 👜👠💄

🏆 Throwback: Mortal Kombat

Ajay: Yes, this movie is bad. But I would put this movie now in the category of so bad that it’s good. They really have no clue when it comes to production value. The person with the clipboard that’s supposed to keep track of inconsistencies was totally asleep at the wheel.

But let’s be honest…that’s not why you’re watching this movie. Spider webs are thick and still up in the tunnel a character supposedly walked through? Who cares! SCORPION RIPPED HIS FACE OFF AND BREATHED FIRE! So satisfying, just like the game you played used to be. Worth watching again.

Mona: Hi-ya!! 👊🏼🥋🦎

⛸ I, Tonya

What up squad! Mona and I rented I, Tonya on our Apple TV and checked it out (on a week night! 😱). Here’s what we thought.

Ajay: I totally forgot about half of the stuff that went down with Tonya Harding’s situation back then. They voted to have a Winter Olympics two years after 1992?! Had no idea. Nancy Kerrigan still competed and got the silver?! No way!

I’m sure most of you know the story, so I’ll cut the crap. At the end of this thing, you actually end up feeling really bad for Tonya. It’s a story that exemplifies the trap of poverty and domestic violence, culminating in the denoument of someone’s real life. Tough stuff. And half of what happens is really crazy!

Mona:Unfortunate. ⛸️🏅✉️

🐾 Black Panther

Alright team, caught the latest installment in the Marvel universe this past weekend, Black Panther! Thoughts below.

Ajay: I was worried that this movie would suck. I had listened to a podcast (typical Ajay) with Ta-Nahesi Coates where they talked about how he wrote for Black Panther. I love his world view and writing, so that piqued my interest.

I was surprised how much depth this movie had. There was a lot under the surface around how the world views African nations, people of African origin, and the hopes and possibilities of an African superhero for African-Americans. It has the hallmarks of a great Marvel movie, but the backdrop really elevates it. Soundtrack was weird though. Enjoy!

💎 Jumanji

My wife and I go to see a lot of movies. I decided to try and encapsulate our thoughts on these movies here on Medium. You might notice that my wife, Mona, doesn’t like to write very much.

I know, I know. We saw this movie a teensy bit late. But whatever, we had a lot going on when it came out! The trailer for Jumanji looked hilarious, so we decided to hit the Alamo Drafthouse in Mueller (highly recommended) and give this one a go.

Ajay:If you’re looking for a good time, Jumanji does not disappoint. Great cast, hilarity-primed premise, and fun thrills. The way they executed on the modern version of the story, although a bit gimmicky, really lands. And The Rock really does a great job of pretending that he’s not a total badass with a wuss living inside of him. Highly recommend seeing this one, it’s better than expected.

Mona:JUMANJIIIIIII!!!!! 🌳🐆💎

💀 Coco

My wife and I go to see a lot of movies. I decided to try and encapsulate our thoughts on these movies here on Medium. You might notice that my wife, Mona, doesn’t like to write very much.

Alright gang, wifey and I made the trek to our go-to Plano theater, the Cinemark Legacy, with my sister and cousin to catch the latest Pixar film, Coco. Here were our thoughts.

Ajay: If you know my amazing wife, you know that she’s a mushy ball of emotions. And if you know Pixar movies, you know that they will turn you into mushy balls of emotion. Expect nothing less from Coco.

It’s Pixar in all of its glory, about a boy’s adventure during Día de los Muertos. Stuck in the world of the dead, chaos ensues as he tries to come back to the living. We laughed, cried, and learned about the Day of the Dead. If you’re looking for a heartstring tug, this is your ticket on Turkey Day weekend.

Mona: Familiaaaaa! 👨‍👩‍👧🎸💀

👯‍♀️ Girls Trip

Ajay: I’ll admit, when my wife wanted to watch Girls Trip, I was a little skeptical.

“Really, a movie about a girls trip? Fiiiiine, you really hated furniture shopping with me for 4 hours, you deserve it.”

This movie ended up being amazing, and I am sorry that I ever doubted Mona. It’s obviously about four ladies on a girls trip after they’ve been losing touch. But that’s where the cliches stop, and the craziness begins. If you’re not into raucous humor, I don’t think you’ll like this one. But if you are, I’d highly recommend this movie. Unexpectly hilarious!

Mona: Laaaaaaadiiiiieeeeeesss! 💁🏽‍♀️💅🏽🍊

👩🏼 Atomic Blonde

Ajay: Charlize Theron is a total badass, and this movie establishes that and then some. It’s a really fun, complex spy thriller with lots of twists and turns. The movie can be a little hard to follow, but the payoffs are fun and nuanced. Some people have compared this movie to John Wick, which is kind of true, it just happens to be more cerebral. That dude from Wanted is a great addition as well, and the backdrop of the late 80s in Berlin add some additional edge to an already edgy movie. It’s a great summer movie, highly recommended!

Mona: Badass. 🙎🏼💪🏼🔪
